Jenny phoned today, she said
"My boyfriend's hung like a stallion
But now he says he's gay
So I've overdosed on Valium¨
I can't quite stay awake
And I'm dropping the receiver
But everything's making sense
And I'm content; I'm a believer."
Then the line went dead
So I drove over to her flat
I ran up the staircase
And about halfway up I sat
As from the top of the stairs
The paramedics came
And on a stretcher they held between them
Lay Jenny's body frame
She dribbled from the corner of her mouth
But in her head she was flying
They put her in the ambulance
And one said, "Quick, she's dying"
They drove off down the street
As I ran, following behind
The clouds above us parted
And a light shone, striking me blind
The top of the ambulance opened
And a mass of feathers rose forth
They unfurled into wings, revealing Jenny
And her eyes shone beams due north
Her skin was pale white
Her head was naked and shaven
She flapped her wings steadily
And flew up to heaven
I stood in awe overnight
As heaven's portal stayed open wide
I sat on a jagged rock on the hill
As the stars twinkled and sighed
By morning a few more joined me
By midday there was a crowd
We sat and watched the eerie light
Then I noticed where it glowed
A fat man stood in wonder
At his illuminated mansion
I saw as he looked up in awe
And thought of wealth expansion
So he opened up a business
"Ten thousand pounds to ride the portal!
Ten thousand pounds for eternal salvation!
Ten thousand pounds to be immortal!"
He advertised on television
He advertised on the 'net
People queued for days and weeks
To purchase their ticket
I sat and watched them all arrive
I saw them all ascend
I saw the portal shrinking
As it was coming to an end
The prices skyrocketed
As the portal came to close
We missed our chance for heaven:
People grew morose
But I still sit on the rock
And watch the sky from afar
The sewn-up scar of heaven
And the gently-sighing stars.
